MARK ROSEGREEN, the striker who came in from the cold, has confirmed himself as a key figure in VS Rugby's push for the Beazer Homes League title.

Five goals in five starts — four of them VS victories — have convinced manager Jimmy Knox that Rosegreen's form has hit a new peak. And he is relishing the prospect of pairing Rosegreen and Ian Crawley in a potentially explosive spearhead.

Rosegreen missed the first four league games of the season because of a contract dispute, Knox refusing to compromise the club's wages structure. But he explained this week: "I listened to the points Mark had to make, he listened to me, and in the end we were able to come to an agreement.

"I think he's delighted everything has been sorted out because he's certainly playing as well as at any time in career.

"He is an instinctive striker — he picks up the sort of six-yard chances that can swing a game — and we have definitely looked sharper for having him up front.

"I think he and Ian could prove an ideal combination and hopefully we will soon be able to find out.

"Ian has been coming on very well in training and he could even be ready for a run-out in the reserves next Saturday."

Knox took advantage of Rugby's free mid-week to check out next Saturday's FA Cup opponents West Midlands league side Henley Rovers clinch a 2-0 replay verdict against Rounds Town.

And he was left in no doubt that Rovers, beaten finalists in last season's FA Cup, can present a formidable hurdle in Valley's path towards a possible Cup jackpot.

"They're a good, strong side and their fans certainly give you a very warm welcome," said Knox.

"I'm not worried about the tie, but at the same time we can't afford to drop below the standards we have set if we hope to get any further."
