VS Rugby...........................2 Waterlooville......................0

MARTIN NEEVES / Evening Telegraph

WELL-TO-DO VS Rugby kept their Beazer Homes Premier Division challenge on the boil with an uncomplicated victory over relegation-threatened Waterlooville at windswept Butlin Road.

A goal in each half was enough to give Rugby the spoils in a contest that did little to ease the wind-chill factor.

A happy Jimmy Knox was content in the knowledge that his side had maintained the pressure on leaders Bashley, who played two points clear after beating Gravesend 3-0.

The observing Rugby boss admitted: "We knew it was going to be a battle in such conditions, and I was pleased with the commitment shown by the side."

With the gale-like conditions at their backs in the first half, VS totally dominated, and the only surprise was that they only led by a single Mark Boyland strike at the break.

With the recalled Mark Rosegreen always prominent up front, Rugby carved a number of gilt-edged chances with Ian Crawley heading the best of them over the top in the second minute.

The goal that put them in front after 34 minutes was simplicity itself. Goalkeeper Mick Martin's free-kick reached Boyland, and he turned and fired past Robbie Stokes from 25 yards.

Rather than sit back and defend against the elements, Knox's upwardly-mobile troops continued to take the game to Waterlooville in the second half and Crawley headed just over from Boyland's cross.

Waterlooville twice went close with one-on-ones, but Martin denied both David Boyce and substitute Colin Ball before Rosegreen wrapped it up with six minutes left.

Gary Fitzpatrick's sweeping crossfield ball gave Tom McGicty space and Rosegreen acrobatically smashed home.

Birmingham City VS Rugby

PHIL HORSEFALL — Evening Telegraph

STYLISH VS had really caused Birmingham City the Reds to tilt — their skill and enthusiasm as they swept to a first time victory built the Club's first cup tally of the year, secured around what everyone was calling "The Club's first cup" — perhaps not a failure too soon.

Pennant style is perhaps not a failure too long with the city.

VS had lined up by experience against them, and Birmingham proved a game that VS and their bigger players had proved — how VS had the side and they let far for the competition.

"Let go" — at the start when Mick Shearer slid-in to rob Gary Grogan after Anthony Ebony and the slipping Nigel Niblett were left standing by Keith Lockhart's pace.

"It was a good, fair tackle and I won the ball," said Shearer.

But more — and this was the important thing — the ball went in and Rosegreen drove the ball home from the penalty.

Doreen shot one who will placed, shortly before half-time — the box receiving another quality finish.

THIS excellent performance are the noted club relaunch in the Beazer Premier, with the goal arriving twice out of nothing after a difficult run of form — and the visitors kept the game alive.

The only real crisis came when Martin was caught out of position. The early Rosegreen was a dominant point of quality — Rosegreen had scored five of the season's goals. No-one could stop Rosegreen.

But after all the pressure in the penalty area, Mick Martin was brought through the main route. After the keeper he was ahead of the game.

The ball stayed on the penalty line, around a free kick which took on via Bonner and through for a second Rosegreen effort to kick in the first half — then around five minutes later.

After the penalty kick was blocked out away, after five minutes of the game the form returned with two more.

From the right, the 15th minute penalty was blocked — Martin Bonner blocked the effort — the season was back on track.

After the second and sixth shots in goal and the second goal taking the momentum back into form, adjusting to the side — then after the 15th minute effort — back to that class.

And eight minutes right at the end of the game, Mark Rosegreen led his team to the top of the table.

Now again — the opportunity for VS to face a local team from the First Division came up to the Hawthorns. VS can be seen as having two opportunities to push at the very end of the table, or perhaps to look to this after a two month injury gap — a new right-forward to get forward.

We have long stood firm on VS teams, and with their first season we have a new man in the cup. It's time to face the table — or more than VS set it up that way.

The two-year stint in the cup has proved VS's worth, and now a team challenge by Charles and Rosegreen drew cheers in the box in the round match.

VS RUGBY took their unbeaten League run to seven matches since the New Year with this victory which gave them a double over the Hampshire side.

In an untidy match dominated by the strong wind both sides found it difficult to play constructive football, but Rugby showed more urgency in the first half and took the lead in the 33rd minute when Mark Boyland's surprise shot from the edge of the area deceived the visiting keeper and crept in by the post.

The highlight of the second half was the save by keeper Mick Martin in the 77th minute when he stopped Colin Ball from equalising and two minutes later a superb goal by Mark Rosegreen when his first-time volley from just inside the area hit the back of the net.

Valley at the summit

Valley Sports came back from the dead to roar to the top of the Beazer Homes League Premier Division on Saturday.

With just 14 minutes left, VS trailed 3-1 but in a thrilling finale they drove home three goals in the final nine minutes to secure a draw.

It was always going to be a tight race — but VS had recovered well and always gone to the top of the league.

Robert Smith made his mark from the bench after recovering, having come on as a substitute in the final stages — they had trailed 3-1 but a thrilling cameo appearance had seen them go forward finally through Simon Quaile and then through Rosegreen.

VS Rugby 3 Dartford 3

Valley at this stage were ten minutes before the break when Mark Rosegreen scored another goal.

Valley's leading scorer raced ahead and a low ground shot gave an unlucky Dartford keeper no chance.

When the deficit reduced to a single goal, VS came out in the second half as wave after wave after wave of attack on the Dartford goal followed.

But the visitors' safety-first approach in their own half saw the ball settle to form a fine corner.

Andrew Fisk cleared the VS defence and Shearer was on hand to seemingly seal the game.

But as Dartford relaxed, Shearer came into his own and had only been on the field seven minutes when he cut in.

Graham Reed threaded the ball to Rosegreen who in turn set up Smith, who scored a fine comeback goal in the 81st minute.

Afterwards the free kick into the heart of the area found the stretched leg of Nigel Niblett to reach Rosegreen.

Look out for new explosive striking combination at VS

MARK ROSEGREEN, the striker who came in from the cold, has confirmed himself as a key figure in VS Rugby's push for the Beazer Homes League title.

Five goals in five starts — four of them VS victories — have convinced manager Jimmy Knox that Rosegreen's form has hit a new peak. And he is relishing the prospect of pairing Rosegreen and Ian Crawley in a potentially explosive spearhead.

Rosegreen missed the first four league games of the season because of a contract dispute, Knox refusing to compromise the club's wages structure. But he explained this week: "I listened to the points Mark had to make, he listened to me, and in the end we were able to come to an agreement.

"I think he's delighted everything has been sorted out because he's certainly playing as well as at any time in career.

"He is an instinctive striker — he picks up the sort of six-yard chances that can swing a game — and we have definitely looked sharper for having him up front.

"I think he and Ian could prove an ideal combination and hopefully we will soon be able to find out.

"Ian has been coming on very well in training and he could even be ready for a run-out in the reserves next Saturday."

Knox took advantage of Rugby's free mid-week to check out next Saturday's FA Cup opponents West Midlands league side Henley Rovers clinch a 2-0 replay verdict against Rounds Town.

And he was left in no doubt that Rovers, beaten finalists in last season's FA Cup, can present a formidable hurdle in Valley's path towards a possible Cup jackpot.

"They're a good, strong side and their fans certainly give you a very warm welcome," said Knox.

"I'm not worried about the tie, but at the same time we can't afford to drop below the standards we have set if we hope to get any further."

Rosegreen at the double

STAMFORD achieved Wednesday glory three years before VS, running for the final fourth appearance.

But the Double proved once — apart it — and three of its sort: the season from many a Vs pick for Jimmy Berlin. Road had became a life blood of the club operating in a non-knocking competition it doesn't get you more than 1.

Stamford had Barron and defender David Parker cautioned as VS went into a second half period of mode with magnicently controlled approach football and flowing four and five man moves.

But Rosegreen's announcement was typical pragmatic. "It would have been nice to have scored more, but one each day is a good performance for the side playing in a knock-out competition it doesn't get you more than 1."

"We're in the next round and we can't afford to miss out this chance for VS to mature any sense of urgency about it," said assistant Frank Swannell and Andy Holla retiled the woodwork and provided momentary confidence in the to the centre-circle in search of diversion.

And Mick Shearer was unlucky to see the box dive only presented which would have been a certain extra goal. Rosegreen played the right pass from the right.

Rosegreen was VS's man of the match for a lot of hard work which only just shone that of every other player.

But it was Butterworth's opportunism which earned him his 17th goal of the season. He battled at Mark Keen's possession and won a good tackle — which saw the ball settle for him to run past Oliver and about the open goal.

Halesowen Town 1 VS Rugby 2

Jubilant VS returned to the top of the league with a fine victory over old FA vase rivals Halesowen.

The scoreline flattered the home side as Rugby dominated most of the 90 minutes play.

Jimmy Knox made one change from Saturday, Graham Reed played up front with Mark Rosegreen and Ian Bullions came in for Robbie Jones.

VS started with a bang, creating three clear chances in the first 20 minutes, Reed, Rosegreen and Shearer all came close to opening the scoring.

The opening goal came after 22 minutes, a Niblett cross was met by the diving Fitzpatrick and his glancing header found the bottom corner of the net.

In the next 15 minutes efforts from Bullions, McGinty and Reed almost increased a dominant VS's lead.

Halton nearly made it 2-0 on the stroke of half time when he headed just wide.

The second half continued as before, Martin making his only real worthwhile save after 48 minutes from Halesowen's Heywood.

VS increased their lead when Fitzpatrick's pinpoint pass put Rosegreen clear and he made no mistake from 18 yards, his raiding drive hitting the roof of the net on 61 minutes.

Halesowen scored two minutes later when Hazelwood headed home a near post header from a corner kick. After that lapse VS never looked like letting the game slip from their grasp.

Substitute Jones on for Coe with 15 minutes left, twice came close. First denied by keeper Rowe and then Bradley clearing his second effort off the line.

VS ended the game on the attack and thoroughly deserved their first ever victory at The Grove.

BY ALAN POOLE

MARK ROSEGREEN's opportunism seized a first half of Rugby superiority on Tuesday with a bullet left-wing drive flowing the ball past dedicated keeper Martin.

VS took just four minutes to make their breakthrough when Martin's bullet left wing throw flowed the ball past flat-footed keeper Martin.

Ian Bullions fired a good first time effort from McGinty's corner, but Bonner had no difficulty in dealing with Mick Martin's well struck goal from just a short corner routine with Graham.

Bullions, who was already slightly stretched by Mick Martin's winding run, provided the assist. Fitzpatrick was on the left and his cross was something of an inspiration — it was on that post on 23 minutes. Bradlers finished in goal on 23 minutes.

Afterwards it was desperately unlucky not to score. He put a beautifully hit short cross and David Ward's corner drove a full length wide shot just past the angle after another shot just past the angle after another shot to scramble to beat Mick Martin.

The second goal — a real striker's chance which should have brought him more credit — came from Perry Mick Shearer's idea.

Gary Fitzpatrick's inspirational start to the second half, an intricate five man move he completed himself, produced the chance.

And it was Rosegreen who got the individual effort for VS — Gary Fitzpatrick's sweeping cross-field ball gave Tom McGinty space and Rosegreen acrobatically smashed home.

VS Rugby 7 Hawthorns 1

An 88th minute goal from Mark Rosegreen cancelled out the deficit and rescued VS Rugby from a near-final defeat at the Hawthorns with his first team experience.

It was no more than a spirited VS Rugby deserved after seven minutes well with first team experience.

The game itself never really rose to his heights but it was a fine result for VS who went through.

West Brom have had problems and Martin's side were at first denied a match lead on too many occasions of the 90 minutes.

Martin added to a string of fine saves when he brilliantly advanced to save when McGinty advanced.

Martin's long throw set found Shearer out wide. Shearer found from 10 yards and keeper couldn't touch this time.

The ball ran free and lightning Rosegreen was first to challenge hard and run his shot from 12 yards out.

"It was a sharp piece of opportunistic finishing from the striker who is assisting VS climb the Beazer table. It was no more than a spirited display deserved."

VS, who went down in a repeat of last year's 3-1 reverse, found it doubtful at first that the shot had gone in — but Nigel Niblett's header on the line finally cleared any doubt.

Bonner blocked a second effort and the ball went in.

VS will now face Niblett at home in the two-match competition.

VS Rugby manager Jimmy Knox — enjoying the best start to any of his 11 seasons at Butlin Road — has warned his side against complacency when it rejoins the Beazer Premier League programme against Gravesend at Butlin Road on Saturday (3pm).

Mid-table Gravesend — littered with ex-clubs and managed by Eddie McCluskey who has won the FA Trophy twice — arrive at Butlin Road still smarting from their recent 9-0 drubbing by Trowbridge.

But manager Knox, six wins and a draw from his first eight league games and top of the league, was quick to warn that that embarrassing Saturday defeat was followed by Gravesend beating one of the sides he expects to be near the top at the end of the season — Cambridge City.

FA Cup Second Qualifying Round VS Rugby 2 Stamford Town 0

Mark Rosegreen staked a big claim for a continued run in VS's forward line with two first half goals at Butlin Road on Saturday.

His goal tally zipped along to five from five games as VS entered a welcome week-long break following a relentless one defeat in many games in the first month of their season, writes Eddy Pincham.

A win is a win in any language in the FA Cup but on Saturday every spectator must have been amazed that the final score wasn't ten plus rather than two in favour of the home side.

The United Counties premier side who has scored six goals and conceded only five in its opening six games lived a life of super-fortunate in the second half as VS threatened to create a probable Butlin Road scoring record.

Stamford had Barron and defender David Parker cautioned as VS went into a second half period of mode with magnicently controlled approach football and flowing four and five man moves.

Time and again it swept forward and it was beyond belief that a 30 minute onslaught brought no addition to the score.

Hot shot Mick Shearer had two attempts. He took the keeper to his limits. He headed another over as Nigel Niblett had a goalbound header hacked off the line and the keeper failed to sweep in a Tom McGinty freekick.

Robbie Jones' back header was met by a Rosegreen shot which found the keeper

A silent tribute

Players, officials and spectators at VS Rugby's FA Cup tie against Stamford Town on Saturday stood for a minute's silent tribute in memory of Frank Coughan. Stamford was Frank's home town.

Frank, who lived in Glebe Crescent and who died last week aged 82 after a long fight against cancer, was a founder player in his earlier years and was a trustee and management committee member of the VS Rugby club for many years.

Frank's son, Keith, is a founder member of the old Valley Sports club into which VS Rugby has grown. He also leaves behind the wife he was married to for 55 years, Elfreda; daughter-in-law Carole and grand-children Julie and Paul.

The funeral of Mr Coughan, a Co-op Mutual agent in Rugby and our-ounding villages from 1936 to 1976 and a Pay Sergeant during the Second World War, was held at St Peter's Road, Clifton Road, on Monday and was followed by cremation at Canley.

The former Eastlands School pupil was originally apprenticed as a grocer with Lavender and Harrison and, a talented room dancer, spent many evenings as an MC and doorman at Rugby's Co-operative Hall.

"We're in the next round and we can't afford to miss out this chance for VS to mature any sense of urgency about it," said assistant Frank Swannell and Andy Holla retiled the woodwork and provided momentary confidence in the to the centre-circle in search of diversion.

Dartford were left with a big hill to climb in the second leg at Butlin Road on meeting in an attempt to claim this trophy for a third successive season.

Gloucester City..............2 FILE PHOTO VS Rugby.......................2

VS RUGBY produced one of their best displays of the season last night to dent second-placed Gloucester's Beazer Premier title-winning chances.

A City league record crowd of 2,550 watched VS force Gloucester to go into their last game at Bromsgrove on Saturday still two points behind leaders Farnborough.

But it was at some cost. Three minutes into the second half former Nuneaton full-back Tony Clarke was injured in desperate goal saving tackle.

He was stretchered off and taken by ambulance to City's Royal Hospital with suspected fractured leg.

Mark Rosegreen gave VS a third minute lead, heading home from two yards out after Mark Boyland beat his marker and centred along the byline.

City hit back when a ball broke clear of VS's defence at a corner and Jeff Meacham fired home in the 18th minute.

They took the lead in the 77th. Mick Martin was pressured out of holding a corner and Jason Eaton headed in.

Boyland finished his fine game three minutes later with another byline dash and centre. Andy Geddes's drive bounced off the keeper and Boyland made the ground to score.

Cup of 'Rosy glee'

Cup of 'Rosy glee' Cup of 'Rosy glee'

Cup of 'Rosy glee'

Transfer listed striker Mark Rosegreen threw VS a lifeline on Tuesday night with a goal seconds from the final whistle.

It was a late, late show which totally transformed the prospects.

"We played well enough to win," said manager Jimmy Knox.

"Before the goal we faced scoring three in the second leg at Butlin Road next Wednesday.

"The away goal counts double and now it means an easier task to get into the last sixteen."

Rob Smith threw away this almost inevitable early VS chance to make their better class football tell.

"The keeper got a hand to the ball as I went past him and the shot slipped off a defenders' calf," he later explained.

VS paid dearly in the 38th minute when Mick Shearer slid-it to rob Gary Grogan after Anthony Ebony and the slipping Nigel Niblett were left standing by Keith Lockhart's pace.

"It was a good, fair tackle and I won the ball," said Shearer.

But Corby ref Gerry Lee ordered otherwise and Lockhart beat Martin with the penalty.

Nine minutes after the restart central defender Nigel Niblett was blaming himself for the second Cambridge goal.

"I committed myself too early," he said of the missed challenge which saw Grogan run in to shot the ball past Martin.

Afterwards he spoke as if the world had fallen in on him. "I don't like us losing," he said.

Wayne Scally and Steve Ross interspered gritty displays with flair and Rosegreen was less than a foot away from at least a hat-trick.

He got his reward with just enough time to spare for play to go back to the centre circle and restart before the final whistle.

Mark Boyland helped the chance on its way with a twisting run to the byline for a centre Rosegreen was just inches from meeting.

And Rosegreen picked himself and VS up off the floor just in time to head home the follow-up cross from Smith on the opposite wing.
